SARAJEVO, August 30 (FENA) - The "Carved in Stone" project, implemented by the Mak Dizdar Foundation and supported by USAID and the International Organization for Migration, aimed to bring young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina together through the study, protection, and promotion of cultural heritage.

“The "Carved in Stone" project aims to stimulate an active attitude towards our own cultural heritage among young people, to promote the idea of pluralism and multi-perspective approach in the study of the past, and to point out the richness and vulnerability of our common medieval heritage. We hope that with this project we will raise awareness of the ‘stećak’ medieval tombstones and encourage a more responsible attitude of the state and local communities towards them," said the President of the Mak Dizdar Foundation, Gorčin Dizdar.

Dizdar also noted that the focus of the project was on the ‘stećak’ tombstones that can be found in almost all parts of the country.

“There are more than 60,000 of these medieval tombstones in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and 24 necropoles of the tombstones are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Despite these figures, and their impressive importance to BiH's cultural heritage, the vast majority of ‘stećaks’ are in poor condition,” Dizdar said.

Young people from five BiH cities: Foča, Travnik, Trebinje, Stolac, and Posušje were tasked with forming teams of volunteers with whom they carried out activities as part of this project.
