Krešić: State institutions must take over the management of illegal migration

FENA Press release

MOSTAR, September 4 (FENA) - The BiH Deputy Minister of Security and Head of the Department of Analytics and National Security of the Croat People’s Assembly (HNS), Mijo Krešić believes that it is necessary to establish a functional government as soon as possible so that Bosnia and Herzegovina could respond to all challenges posed by illegal migration and be a reliable partner to international institutions in addressing these and other security concerns.

“Communication within the countries of the region is important, which for now is absent or insufficient, because otherwise, it would be difficult to make the right response and provide guidelines in managing illegal migration. State institutions must fully take over the management of illegal migration and financial resources coming from the EU,” said Krešić.

According to him, the number of illegal migrants coming from the direction of Montenegro and Serbia, detected outside the border crossing points in an attempt to cross into BiH, has significantly increased compared to last year, which means that BiH is facing even greater challenges that could further disrupt the security situation.

“The needs of the BiH Border Police must be respected and a significant number of new police officers must be secured in order for this institution to meet all the challenges it faces. We need to further strengthen the border police and the Foreigners Service, as these two institutions are the most exposed. The problem of illegal migration will not be stopped quickly,” said Krešić.

Krešić drew attention to the problem of not knowing the identities of persons entering BiH, and to the fact that more and more illegal migrants are committing crimes, which in some cases ends with death.

“This is why consistent application of the laws is important and in no way should put the humanitarian aspect of illegal migration ahead of the security one. All law enforcement and security agencies have to invest additional engagement in combating organized crime and smuggling of illegal migrants,” Krešić said.

He added that it is unacceptable for the HNS and HDZ BiH to unilaterally make decisions on the establishment of reception centers without agreement with local authorities, “especially in the area where there is majority Croat population.”

“The way it has been done so far, we will never reach a quality solution,” Krešić said.
