SARAJEVO, September 17 (FENA) - Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in BiH and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) BiH have produced a set of manuals for the protection against natural and other disasters affecting Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Head of the Department for Strategic Planning, Protection and Rescue Measures at the BiH Ministry of Security, Idriz Brković, explained in a statement to reporters that the manual is useful for training of the members of the protection and rescue services, as well as for the general population.

“The manual will be available to all municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but it will also be available online. We will try to present it additionally so that the population is better informed about what to do before, during and after the accident,” emphasized Brković before presenting the set of manuals.

Head of the Fire Protection and Fire Department in the FBiH Civil Protection Administration, Ramo Dautbašić, also stresses the importance of this set of manuals and emphasized that in the event of an accident, calm and steady behavior is important, and acting in accordance with the recommendations of the competent authorities.

The set of manuals covers the six most common types of disasters (floods, fires, earthquakes, landslides, heavy snowfall, avalanches, and industrial accidents), and was developed as part of a project designed to strengthen disaster resilience (IRLMM) in the municipalities of Livno, Mrkonjić-Grad and Maglaj, financed by the Czech Republic.

Ambassador of the Czech Republik to BiH Jakub Skalník emphasized that the Czech experts worked on this project in partnership with local experts, and are ready to continue their support and cooperation.

“This is one of the sectors in which the Czech Republic supports Bosnia and Herzegovina. We have had a bad experience in the Czech Republic with natural disasters (floods), and we are ready to help other countries,” he stressed.

The UNDP BiH Resident Representative Steliana Nedera emphasized that the manuals, in addition to legal provisions and standards related to disasters, also contain simulation exercises to respond more effectively to possible disasters.

Among the activities, as she also recalled, earlier this year, they held training for representatives of civil protection staffs in the segment of decision making, operational procedures and organization of work in the system of protection and rescue at the local level.

“Working in 170 countries, the UNDP has testified to the fact that disasters can instantly destroy the economy and the efforts invested over the years. That's why UNDP is making global efforts to adapt countries to the effects of climate change and improve disaster risk management,” she stressed.

The aim of the project 'Strengthening the resilience to disasters in Livno, Mrkonjić-Grad and Maglaj' is to strengthen the capacities for disaster risk reduction in partner units of local self-government, with a focus on vulnerable population categories.

The project is being implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in cooperation with the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the FBiH Civil Protection Administration, the RS Civil Protection Administration and local self-government units - Livno, Mrkonjić-Grad and Maglaj.
