Out of total number of all graduates in BiH, 60 percent of them are women

MOSTAR, September 17 (FENA) – The FBiH Ministry of Education and Science today in Mostar held a debate on the topic "Women in Science" to mark the issuing of a collection of papers from the academic conference "Women Scientists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Their Research Work."

The FBiH Minister of Education and Science, Professor Elvira Dilberović, PhD, Professor Marija Čutura, PhD, and Assist. Professor Edim Šator, PhD, spoke about the collection, which was presented on this occasion, and the position and role of women in science.

Minister Dilberović pointed out that the collection was the result of the comprehensive scientific conference organized by the FBiH Ministry of Education and Science in April last year, in cooperation with the Faculty of Humanities "Džemal Bijedić", University of Mostar and the Institute for Modern History in Sarajevo.

“The collection is divided into several chapters with the aim of highlighting the historical development of women's education in BiH, as well as their contribution to the institutionalization of science, with particular reference to individual women scientists who have left a significant mark and made a huge contribution to the development of science in BiH,” said Dilberović.

She also mentioned the experiences of European countries according to which the share of women scientists in leadership positions has increased significantly in recent decades, but is still much less than their representation in the total number of employees in higher education and scientific institutions.

According to Dilberović, it is also evident that women, even with the same qualifications, most often work in lower positions than their male counterparts, which is why governments in many countries, as well as universities in Europe and the US, have created programs that deal with research and promoting women's equality in academic environment.

“Our public is very little aware of the contribution and names of BiH female scientists both throughout history and in present day, and I would like to see these results that will be presented in the collection to bring to students as close as possible this information and that they are the ones upon whom scientific research remains,” said Dilberović.

Professor Čutura pointed out in her presentation that there is a growing trend in the EU, as well as in BiH, when it comes to the share of college-educated women in the overall higher education population.

In BiH, in the last three years, the total number of graduates on average has been 60 percent of women, while there was 40 percent of women in the total number of those who have obtained a doctorate degree.

“The increase in the share of women with higher education is somewhat reflected in the increase in the share of women in the higher education sector, although there is still a significant disparity in relative and absolute terms. According to statistics, the share of women in the higher education sector in science-teaching jobs is below 50 percent (46.23).

However, BiH has a slightly higher average in the share of women in the higher education sector than the EU average,” underlined Čutura.
