Mektić: The situation with migrants in BiH is not getting worse at least

SARAJEVO, September 24 (FENA) - The BiH Security Minister Dragan Mektić told reporters in Sarajevo today that the situation regarding migrants is not deteriorating, and that considering the circumstances, it is even improving. The fact is that the number of migrants in BiH is decreasing.

“I think there are about 3,500 of them in BiH at the moment, and we had a situation when there were more than six thousand,” said Mektić after a working-consultative meeting held at the invitation of BiH Council of Ministers Chairman Denis Zvizdić with the directors of security agencies at the state level on how to increase efficiency and establish better migration control and management capacities in BiH.

If the figure stays at about 3,500 migrants, with the current capacities, “there is enough accommodation for the migrants to stay through the winter."

“We plan very soon, upon the decision of the FBiH government, to set up another reception center, just in case,” said Mektić.

He says it is good that at today's meeting they heard the opinions of directors of the security agencies to see how, within the competences of the Council of Ministers of BiH, they can improve the working capacities of these security agencies.

“This was mainly related to strengthening the staffing and technical capacities of security agencies, and this is especially interesting this year when we have no budget, so there is no chance for some new capital and other investments within these security agencies,” said Minister Mektić.

“We have a situation at the moment where the Border Police is understaffed, lacking 500 police officers,” said Mektić.

"We are the only European country outside the EU that has not signed an operational agreement with FRONTEX, an EU institution for border protection and fight against illegal migration, from which we could have received significant assistance, even in the form of police personnel,” said Minister Mektić.
