SARAJEVO, October 1 (FENA) - The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants, Felipe Gonzales Morales at the end of his official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina appealed to BiH authorities at all levels to work together to find a response at the state level to the migrant crisis.

At a press conference held today in Sarajevo, he said that there are positive aspects in terms of migration management in BiH that are in line with international human rights standards and that the BiH citizens are generously helping migrants by giving them food, clothing and other necessities.

“However, the fragmented political structure, lack of a unified vision and the will of the authorities at various levels for sincere cooperation undermine the full enjoyment of human rights of migrants and asylum seekers,” Morales said.

He added that it is the fact that all reception centers are located in the Federation of BiH and that most of the migrants are located in the Una-Sana Canton is a clear illustration is all a clear sign that the migration issue is highly politicized in the country with divided political programs.

“The state must take the lead in developing a comprehensive strategy that will provide a lasting solution for migrants, especially asylum seekers, in this country,” Morales emphasized.

He stated that the most urgent issue concerns the site of Vučjak, a former landfill near mine-contaminated areas, which is inadequate to accommodate people.

Morales stressed that he has received reliable information that the Croatian police have been abusing and beating migrants in their territory and forcibly returning them to BiH.
