SARAJEVO, October 17 (FENA) - The project "Assessing the State of Nature and Natural Resources Management in Bosnia and Herzegovina" (PSP BiH), was presented today, bringing together scientists, representatives of the legislative and executive authorities, the non-governmental sector and international organizations in BiH.

The document was presented by a representative of the FBiH Ministry of Environment and Tourism and project coordinator, professor Senka Barudanović, who said that the project seeks to foster dialogue between the scientific community in BiH and decision-makers on the use of natural resources and nature conservation. In order to have an informed dialogue and sustainable decision-making, it is necessary to have an analysis of the state of nature.

Therefore, she emphasized, the purpose of the project is to establish an instrument for making informed decisions on the use of biodiversity and natural resources.

“The aim of the project is to prepare an assessment of ecosystems and ecosystem services in BiH, including the development of ancillary tools for policy makers, establish conditions for effective use of the Assessment, and develop and devise available policy support tools and methodologies,” said Barudanović.

She emphasized that successful implementation of the project requires engagement and quality and continued participation of a number of scientists of different profiles and decision-makers in different sectors.

Assistant FBiH Minister for the Environment and Development Mehmed Cero believes that the PSP BiH project is of crucial importance for the country, as it will help the state institutions make the right decisions in the next 10 years, but also help us use our natural resources in a sustainable way.

“We are aware of the richness and diversity of our biological, geomorphological, climatic, cultural resources, but we are not well organized to use them in a sustainable way,” he said.

The presented document is implemented by the Center for Ecology and Natural Resources "Academician Sulejman Redžić", at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, University of Sarajevo.
