Bičakčić: Renewable energy sources are the future for energy sector in BiH

FENA

NEUM, October 21 (FENA) - President of the BiH branch of the International Council for Large Power Systems (BHO CIGRE), Edhem Bičakčić, said in Neum on Monday that Bosnia and Herzegovina produces about 16 terawatt hours of electricity annually, 67 percent of which comes from thermal power plants fueled by coal, while production from renewable sources is minimal.

“BiH has to follow European and world trends, which are renewable energy sources. We are entering a technical revolution that will result in a whole new relationship and situation in the electricity industry,” Bičakčić told FENA after the introductory presentation "Energy Sector Development Projections for the period until 2035", held as part of the 14th BHO CIGRE conference.

According to him, the development and construction of electricity facilities from renewable sources in BiH is at the very beginning and the current use of available potential of wind, sun, water and biofuels has been minimal.

“It is necessary to produce 120 megawatts of renewable energy annually, for which it is necessary to provide EUR 120 million of investments each year, and these investments should mostly come from abroad. We need to create the conditions and apply this method of financing,” said Bičakčić, emphasizing that wind and solar power plants are a costly but profitable investment.

At the three-day conference in Neum, five hundred electrical engineers and other experts gathered to present to the expert and scientific community experiences in all areas of planning, maintenance and development of energy systems.

The conference in Neum ends on 23 October, with a set of conclusions which will be submitted to the relevant state and entity bodies for further action.
