SARAJEVO, October 22 (FENA) - A two-day simulation exercise to evaluate the BiH Strategy for the Prevention of the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) has begun today in Sarajevo as part of the efforts undertaken by Bosnia and Herzegovina in the context of collective security commitments.

The exercise, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH (MFA BiH), together with the Ministry of Defense of BiH (MoD BiH), the Center for Security Cooperation (RACVIAC) and the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), is a test of implementation of the aforementioned strategies.

Participants of the exercise, which has gathered more than 30 representatives of the BiH institutions and agencies, as well as representatives of the US Command in Europe (US EUCOM), RACVIAC and DTRA, were welcomed by BiH Deputy Secretary of Defense Sead Jusić, who stressed the importance of the steps Bosnia and Herzegovina is taking to strengthen security, including appropriate mechanisms to respond to global threats and challenges.

He stressed that MoD BiH, as the initiator of the drafting of the national strategy, together with other stakeholders, will be committed to working on establishing quality mechanisms, contributing to capacity building and successful coordination of overall activities.

In a statement to the press ahead of the start of the exercise, Jusić stressed the importance of identifying the dangers and threats of possible misuse and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, putting this in the context of intensified migration, the movement of people in transit, who often come from crisis areas, and even those in which different extremist ideologies and tendencies are also present.

"Such individuals can, without knowing it, be used or misused for the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, which can ultimately be used for various terrorist threats or intentions," warned the BiH Deputy Defense Minister.

Participants in the simulation exercise were also welcomed by US Federal Judge Richard Stearns, who emphasized the importance of all elements that serve to strengthen security at the local, regional and global levels.
