FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 31 (FENA) - BiH Minister of Security Dragan Mektić received today the newly appointed Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH, Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec, in Sarajevo.

They discussed the current security challenges BiH is facing and implementation of activities aimed at strengthening the capacities of the Ministry of Security and law enforcement agencies.

They expressed satisfaction with cooperation of the Ministry of Security of BiH and the OSCE Mission to BiH so far, which is enhanced through numerous joint security projects.

"The OSCE Mission to BiH will continue to support the Ministry and security agencies in all areas of need," said Ambassador Kavalec, emphasizing the importance of exchanging experience, knowledge and continuous capacity building of institutions in order to respond more effectively to increasingly complex security challenges.

Mektić stressed that a key problem in BiH is lack of the rule of law and that significant changes are needed in this area in order to restore citizens' confidence.

The migrant situation and addressing the issues of accommodation, humanitarian and health care for migrants in BiH were the topic of today's meeting between Minister Dragan Mektić and UNHCR Deputy Regional Representative for Southeast Europe Francesca Bonelli.

Mektić informed Bonelli about current activities and plans to address this complex situation, pointing out that the greatest challenge at this point is finding an adequate location to build a reception center and taking care of migrants.

He particularly emphasized the fact that winter is coming and that adequate accommodation is needed for persons currently staying in inappropriate and inadequate centers.

Referring to the future activities of the UNHCR, Bonelli said she expects to continue cooperation and partnership with the BiH Ministry of Security in the implementation of joint projects and protection of the most vulnerable categories of population, BiH Ministry of Security stated.
