USC police to restrict movement of migrants from Bira and Miral as of Friday

BIHAĆ, November 13 (FENA) - Task Force on Migration Crisis Coordination and Monitoring in the Una-Sana Canton (USC) reaffirmed its position on the need to close Bira and Miral reception centers at a meeting today, and stressed that the police will completely restrict freedom of movement for all users of the services of these temporary centers as of November 15.

“BiH Minister of Security Dragan Mektić recently said that the closure of Bira and Miral is currently impossible, but we do not have any official information on the possible extension or termination of the contract for use of these premises. The contracts expire on November 15 and the Task Force's position on this issue is clear. Due to the control and surveillance of the security and health situation, we have decided to restrict the movement of all migrants currently staying in these two centers,” said USC Interior Minister Nermin Kljajić.

He added that the Task Force was forced to make such a move, primarily to protect citizens of Bihać and Velika Kladuša and their property, or because of "a series of false promises made by representatives of the competent state institutions".

“The police will restrict the movement of Bira and Miral migrants, and they will only be able to leave the center if they wish to leave the Una-Sana Canton. We can no longer tolerate false promises, because the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Una-Sana Canton (USC MoI) recorded about 43.000 migrants in this area only for this year,” Kljajić emphasized.

Special concern was expressed about the health situation in the temporary camp in Vučjak, but it was reiterated that there is no alternative solution at the moment.

“Migrants from Vučjak can only be displaced outside the USC area, because we are already out of power. We have been taking care of these people for two years, and now we are considered inhumane because of the situation in Vučjak. We really try to provide these people with everything we are able to, from food and water to collecting garbage. Everyone is worried, and no one is doing anything. We give our best and we constantly appeal to state institutions and the European Union to help us. Whoever thinks that they can do better for migrants and refugees, they are welcome to come and take care and provide more adequate accommodation,” said USC Minister of Health, Labor and Social Policy Nermina Ćemalović.

It was reiterated that opening of new reception centers in the area is out of question, especially until the issue of closing Bira and Miral, i.e. displacement of migrants and refugees from populated urban areas of Bihać and Velika Kladuša is resolved.
