A hoard of weapons from 8th century BC found near Livno

FENA

LIVNO, November 15 (FENA) - A hoard of weapons dating as far back as the 8th century BC has been found at Grepci in the settlement of Prisap in Livno, where the Catholic cemetery is located today.

As Marija Marić Baković, on behalf of the Franciscan Museum and Art Gallery Gorica told FENA, archaeological discoveries were conducted in September, followed by additional analysis, and the results were published on Thursday, November 14.

"Grepci have never been systematically archaeologically explored, and during the excavation of a family tomb, a hoard of weapons was found thus showing the importance of this settlement from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages," Baković said.

She added that a bronze age settlement had developed at nearby Luščić near Prisap in the Livno Field, and later the focus was shifted to Grepci.

The hoard of weapons from the 8th century BC was found at this location, while a Roman necropolis of a nearby settlement in Vašarovine was located on the slopes of Grepci. During the early Middle Ages, a settlement was developed where a church was built, as well as a cemetery.

She added that a larger cemetery with 53 stećak tombstones was registered in Grepci, and only 6 graves were explored in this study.

"Parts of a traditional costume, such as ring, buckle, and a coin were found in the graves. It is indicative of graves from the 13th to 15th century, and according to the arrangement of the preserved stećak tombstones it is clear that this cemetery is located over a large area, which has been dislocated due to the contemporary graves," Baković said.

The research found that the graves were arranged in rows extending from north to south, partly following the natural slope of the terrain.

"Unfortunately, a large part of the cemetery has been relocated due to modern-day graves in such a way that we do not obtain any archaeological information. We have managed to do research of one part of the medieval cemetery, and we hope that the research will continue in the future," Baković emphasized.
