SARAJEVO, November 18 (FENA) - An MP of SDP BiH in the FBiH Parliament Irfan Čengić and president of the PDP caucus in the RS National Assembly Perica Bundalo presented a working version of the new law on political parties in FBiH and RS today in Sarajevo.

“Our goal was to have the harmonized work of political parties in both entities. At the same time, we intend to modernize their operation because it is impossible for political parties in the 21st century to operate on the basis of laws from the time of former Yugoslavia, where it was mostly a single-party system and the onset of democracy,” Čengić said.

The Law on Political Parties has drafted on the basis of similar existing laws in the region, which, among other things, define the establishment and merging of political parties.

“Here, we have almost more political parties than residents, and they all boast with large numbers of members. In this regard, a unique register has to be established,” Čengić believes.

This law proposal should also stipulate how many signatures must be collected to register a party.

“We proposed this number to be either 5,000 or 10,000 signatures as a condition for establishing a political party. In Europe, only Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine and Serbia require 10,000 signatures. I think 5,000 is enough for Republika Srpska,” Bundalo said.

According to the Central Election Commission data, there are approximately 140 political entities active in BiH.

“Last year, at the initiative of the CEC, the registry courts removed 162 political organizations from the register. This shows that in BiH we have a contaminated political space with many political parties. Only Austria and Bulgaria have more registered political parties than BiH,” Bundalo concluded.
