Numerous discriminatory definitions in BiH textbooks

SARAJEVO, November 21 (FENA) - The FBiH Ministry of Education and Science will contact the authors of secondary school textbooks and ask for the recommendations made within Initiatives for affirmative amendments to school textbooks for elementary and secondary schools to be respected.

This was highlighted today during a discussion on the project "Gender-based Violence - A Look from Another Angle: Violence in Youth Relations" implemented by the CURE Foundation, and the Initiative is part of the project.

Four high school graded readers were analyzed, as well as textbooks on history, philosophy and sociology, and it was found that the textbooks contained a large number of stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination, and a problematic way of presenting a woman, as well as some definitions.

"In most cases, women are represented as mothers, housewives, cooks, while men are scientists, physicists, mathematicians, pilots or astronauts. Therefore, we wanted to do some balance and improve the image of women in textbooks," said Denija Hidić from CURE Foundation today.

After analyzing textbooks, a letter was sent to the BiH Agency for Gender Equality and pointed to discriminatory definitions and stereotypical representations of women, which are not in accordance with the BiH Constitution or the Law on Gender Equality, or with international conventions to which BiH is a signatory.

The CURE Foundation was asked to exclude certain sentences from the textbooks and to give their opinion how they should be explained in the textbooks, which is why they consulted experts and offered an accurate and scientifically based definition.

As Hidić explains, the most problematic is the textbook of sociology which is transcribed from Croatia, and one of the issues that needs to be addressed is the fact that single-parent families are not recognized in the entire BiH education system.

The long-term plan is to initiate the process of establishing a reference body that will create a rulebook that will serve educational institutions when selecting curriculum in schools, as well as when creating school textbooks.
