International Red Cross / Crescent delegation visits Bihać

FENA Press release

BIHAĆ, November 21 (FENA) - International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent gathers 192 countries around the world, which through volunteer work and through the distribution of humanitarian aid, respond to crisis hot spots in the world.

For the last two years, the migrant crisis in BiH, especially in the Una-Sana Canton (USC), has activated the mechanism of assistance of these organizations through support to their sister organizations, which was discussed today during the visit of the  International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent to the USC Government.

"The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent is providing assistance through an emergency appeal that currently has a value of approximately 3.8 million Swiss francs. Also, a major contribution was made through sister national societies, namely, the largest contributions were made by the German Red Cross and the Turkish Red Crescent. What we also talked about was the local population - to preserve the dignity of the local population and preserve the dignity of migrants along this route," said Vice President of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Kerem Kinik.

Although numerous agencies provide assistance in the migrant crisis, the largest burden is on the Red Cross volunteers, who, through their volunteer work, were the first to assist migrants coming to the Canton. Prime Minister of the Una-Sana Canton Mustafa Ružnić presented the real situation as well as the European Union's activities regarding the situation in the USC today.

"I have informed Vice President of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies about the crisis in the institutions competent in BiH and that solving this crisis when it comes to our canton must be resolved by urgently relocating Vučjak outside the USC and Bira and Miral outside the populated areas,” emphasizes Ružnić.

The delegation visited the temporary center Vučjak where they had the opportunity to see what difficulties Bihać Red Cross faces when trying to help migrants who reside here. It has been announced that an international conference of Red Crescent and Cross Societies will be held soon, where the current migrant crisis in BiH will be discussed with a concrete plan of further support and assistance.
