Fraud Awareness Week in BiH gathers 400 participants and 600 students

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, November 22 (FENA) - International Fraud Awareness Week, organized by Deloitte audit and consulting company and a partner group, was marked for the first time in BiH from 18 to 22 November to raise awareness of the importance of combating financial crime, fraud and corruption.

During the five days of this initiative, two conferences, two events and one webinar were held, with 58 speakers and lecturers, more than 400 participants and 600 students participating in the research.

The first two days were conferences that gathered lecturers and experts from the region and the world, while the last three days of the International Fraud Awareness Week in BiH covered a variety of topics: rule of law, forensic investigation, money laundering, internal audit, tax fraud.

On the occasion of this initiative, the Office of the European Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina organized a discussion with representatives of the European Union's Rule of Law projects in order to highlight the importance of the progress of reform processes in this area.

“Bosnia and Herzegovina needs to find systemic solutions to strengthen the rule of law, a fundamental value of the European Union, which every future member state must fully respect. Today's discussion with EU projects is part of our initiative to further strengthen and accelerate the rule of law reform process in BiH. Our projects support this process and we are pleased to work together to strengthen the rule of law in BiH,” said Nicolas Bizel, Head of Operations Section I (Justice and Home Affairs, Public Administration Reform) of the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Discussions with representatives of the judiciary, civil society, the private sector and the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina highlighted key obstacles to the reform process. Although most participants agree that the deadlock for implementation of reforms caused by "lack of political will" needs to be overcome, the collective responsibility of citizens who need to demand change is also emphasized.

“Our goal is to raise public awareness of the importance of understanding the complexity of fraud, corruption and crime in this country. We want to inform young people and citizens about possible preventive measures and work together to find sustainable solutions and achieve useful results,” said Sabina Softić, Audit Partner for Adriatic Region, Deloitte BiH.

During the Fraud Awareness Week, Deloitte paid special attention to students and young people through organizing various activities - a survey on students' perceptions of fraud and corruption in BiH, the "Say No to Fraud and Corruption with Your Instagram Profile" Contest and "Financial Crime Academy" was held on Wednesday, November 20, at the School of Economics and Business, University of Sarajevo attended by more than 70 students, Deloitte stated.
