SARAJEVO, November 26 (FENA) - Female politicians in BiH with experience in the legislative and executive branches have today confirmed once again at a roundtable in Sarajevo that politics is not a profession of equal opportunity for women and men.
“Politics is the profession with the most unwritten rules. This is precisely what puts women at a disadvantage compared to men.
The quota for women is 40 percent, and we are currently at least 13 percent below that minimum. So far, we have not noticed that anybody has been trying too hard to change this,” said Lejla Ramić Mesihović, Manager of the project "Women in BiH Elections", which hosted the roundtable.
Participants pointed to the issue of respecting a woman in the workplace even when she is a politician. Among them, Ljilja Zovko, who was the head of the caucus of Croats in the House of Peoples of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly in the last term, stressed the need to become familiar with the culture of all new trends, behaviors and standards, and to recognize where and what can be done for the benefit of women in politics.
In this regard, the new ILO Convention on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work (C190) was presented by ILO Coordinator Lejla Tanović, stating that definitions of violence and harassment in the world of work are being provided for the first time.
“A unique and comprehensive framework is being established that is gender sensitive and inclusive,” Tanović added.
The roundtable was organized as part of a global movement aimed at contributing to systematic change and strengthening global feminist solidarity within the campaign ‘16 days of Activism’.
