Mahmutbegović strongly condemns use of special forces against Mostar citizens

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, December 9 (FENA) - Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Vice President Melika Mahmutbegović strongly condemns the use of special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton against citizens of Mostar this morning in order to unblock the Uborak landfill.

"We demand that an investigation be conducted into the use of special police forces, as well as regarding the circumstances in which more persons were injured and that those who used excessive police force to disperse citizens who have been protesting peacefully and non-violently for months, claiming only their rights, bear responsibility - said Mahmutbegovic in a press release.

The authorities of the City of Mostar and the competent cantonal institutions underlines Mahmutbegović, must respect the justified demands of their citizens who have been warning for months of illegal activities in connection with the Uborak landfill.

"They have the right to raise their voice against what they consider unacceptable, which, according to their public statements, is the improper disposal of waste of all kinds, which is out of place in such a landfill. This is especially true, because of the above mentioned alone causes enormous damage to the local community, the City of Mostar and all citizens, and most of all the inhabitants of the settlements Vrapčići and Bijelo Polje," states Mahmutbegović.

Mahmutbegović stresses that it is especially shocking that all this is done in the run-up to tomorrow's International Human Rights Day, "once again pointing to the need for a deep rethinking in our society with regard to the protection of the interests of every person and their freedoms."

"We invite the competent Ministry of Environment and Tourism of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to participate actively in solving the aforementioned problem, and those in charge of the landfill company to comply with the previously issued orders of the FBiH Inspection Directorate. We appeal to all parties that a systemic and long-term solution to this problem can only be reached through dialogue and mutual respect," said Mahmutbegović, it was stated from the FBiH Vice President's Public Relations Office.
