SARAJEVO, December 10 (FENA) - The EU Info Center in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Peacebuilding Network marked Human Rights Day today at a rally in Sarajevo attended by hundreds of elementary school students from across Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Together with the students, EU officials, ambassadors of member states, representatives of international organizations and civil society emphasized the importance of respecting and respecting fundamental human rights in BiH.

Human rights, democracy and the rule of law are fundamental principles of the European Union. Respect for human rights is a prerequisite for countries aspiring to join the European Union, it was said.

The European Union continuously supports the efforts of organizations and institutions to ensure the protection of fundamental human rights through projects, initiatives and advocacy.

Today's event was aimed to support students, schools and young activists across Bosnia and Herzegovina in their efforts to protect human rights.

The organizers presented the peace awards to schools actively contributing to the promotion of human rights protection, reconciliation and the promotion of European Union values.

Ahead of the event, Head of the EU Delegation to BiH and EU Special Representative, Johann Sattler, told reporters that speaking about human rights inevitably leads to speaking about the European Union itself, or why this European community is an attractive concept.

“Firstly, the EU is the most integrated economic community and the most powerful economic power, and second, more importantly, it is a union of values that includes human rights, whose protection we work everywhere in the world.

As part of human rights protection tasks, we protect those who are the weakest and in the state of need - children, the elderly, minorities and many other categories.

However, I must emphasize that this is the task of the whole society; not only the international community or non-governmental organizations, but indeed the whole society must work in this direction. This is especially important when it comes to the youngest,” Sattler said, expressing his satisfaction to be attending the gathering of about 700 children from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina who need to gain an understanding of the importance of protecting human rights.

German Ambassador to BiH Margret Maria Uebber told reporters that Germany, as a member state, fully shares all the values of the European Union, which are at the same time its national values.

“In all the activities and projects we are conducting here in BiH, one of the basic elements is respect for fundamental human rights,” said Uebber.

Ambassador Uebber presented one of the peace awards to schools during today's event in Sarajevo and expressed her satisfaction that the importance of protecting and valuing human rights and engagement in this area is being increasingly recognized by young people.
