SARAJEVO, December 25 (FENA) - Serbia's adoption of defense and national security strategy would mean threat to regional peace and stability, and would also be an introduction to new tensions in the Western Balkans, as it would be an act of open hostility towards the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, said the BiH Presidency Chairman Željko Komšić in a statement to FENA.
As he emphasized, in order to preserve peace, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić is obliged to suspend the Strategy immediately, before it is too late, reminding that Bosnia and Herzegovina still carries fresh wounds since the last Serbian aggression and genocide committed in our country.
"They can be sure that we will not allow this to happen again," Komšić said, noting that Serbia is no guarantor of the Dayton Peace Agreement.
The signatories to the General Framework Agreement for Peace in BiH, Komšić added, including the former FR Yugoslavia and today its legal successor, the Republic of Serbia, have pledged to recognize and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of BiH and have no authority over BiH in this regard.
In the accompanying letters, which form an integral part of the Dayton Peace Agreement, the FR Yugoslavia, the present-day Republic of Serbia, committed itself to a number of elements that are in complete contradiction to what is proposed in the said Strategy, especially in the part concerning the military and defense aspects, Komšić stressed.
“If Serbia intends to withdraw from the Dayton Peace Agreement, then they should let us know, it would be our pleasure to do things differently in BiH,” said the BiH Presidency Chairman.
The strategy, he added, cannot really have any legal validity under the basic postulates of international law because it violates an international agreement, and if they do not know this, "then it would be good for someone to advise them properly".
Considering that this constitutes as a conscious breach of the Dayton Peace Agreement, in order to shape Serbia's public policies towards the neighboring country, Komšić reminds that some of the Dayton signatories are some of the most important NATO members.
“The NATO will come to the border on the Drina River very soon, in order to prevent such Serbian fantasies. BiH has to, and will become, a member of NATO precisely because of Serbia's plans to make claims against a part of the territory of the sovereign state of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” concluded the BiH Presidency Chairman Željko Komšić.
