Salkić calls on Inzko to sanction organizers of marking of January 9 in RS

FENA Press release

BANJA LUKA, January 5 (FENA) - Republika Srpska Vice-President Ramiz Salkić warned today that the RS continuation on marking January 9 as the “Day of Republika Srpska” is unconstitutional, illegal and immoral and called on High Representative in BiH Valentin Inzko to take sanctions against the organizers of this marking.

He recalled that marking of January 9 goes against the decision of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which explicitly prohibited the marking of that date as the day of the entity.  He also noted that earlier the Venice Commission had stated that the date was not appropriate to be marked as an entity day led by feelings and events of importance to only one nation - Serbian, while other communities consider it a painful memory, the RS Vice -President's cabinet stated.

He added that the fact that the organizers, the designers, and then the implementers of the conclusions of the Assembly of the Serb people of 9 January 1992, got tried and sentenced before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague for ethnic cleansing, persecution, grave crimes, genocide, and joint criminal enterprise, speaks volumes about the character of January 9.

The entire Bosnian Serb military and political leadership was convicted of serious crimes, persecution, systematic rape, murder, joint criminal enterprise and genocide.

“I call on the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in accordance with his post and authority, to react and take sanctions against the organizers of January 9 marking as entity day for violating the decisions of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and thus it is also disrespect of the Dayton Peace Agreement, as well as endangering of peace in our country,” said Salkić.

“I also urge judicial institutions, in accordance with their mandate, to prosecute and sanction those who, by continuing to mark January 9, violate the decision of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but at the same time spread national hatred, ” the RS Vice-President stated.

He called on citizens, who disagree with marking of January 9, for activism and for taking steps to remind the public of the fatal consequences of January 9, 1992.
