BiH is the only country to not conduct 2021 census

SARAJEVO, January 9 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina will not conduct a population census in 2021, when Europe and the countries of our region will do so according to a 10-year cycle, the BiH Agency for Statistics confirmed this for daily newspaper 'Dnevni avaz'.

The Agency for Statistics of BiH claims that it was only in the second half of last year that they were tasked from the Council of Ministers of BiH to begin activities related to the preparation of laws on BiH statistics, population census and census of agriculture. The Agency accordingly formed working groups to draft the necessary laws.

"The law on census will define the time of conducting the census of households and apartments, the budget and basic guidelines for the methodology of work and the method of data collection. It takes three to five years to prepare the population census," the Agency replied.

Population censuses are conducted every ten years. Since the previous census in BiH was conducted in 2013, according to this dynamic, the next one should be in 2023.

This means that the BiH population data will not be comparable to the 2021 census countries.

"The comparison will not be accurate," Amer Osmić, Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Political Sciences in Sarajevo, said for 'Dnevni Avaz'.

He points out that the census is necessary because of the analysis, projections and planning of socio-economic development, it is important to have the accurate information.

"Projections say that, with this wave of departures, we are definitely below three million residents. The population is the most important part of the state, it drives the society. It would be good if we had valid information. We cannot talk about any predictions if we do not know the real plans, and what we are getting from the field are not very optimistic indicators that the population census will be conducted in 2021," said Osmić.
