TUZLA, January 13 (FENA) – Following last night’s protests in Tuzla over extremely high level of air pollution, citizens are announcing to continue with protests on Wednesday. They claim to have difficulty breathing and are concerned about people suffering from respiratory diseases and cancer.
Also, the University Clinical Center announced a press conference of the Pulmonary Diseases Clinic tomorrow to warn about the urgency of this problem.
The values of harmful PM particles in Tuzla reach 750 µg/m3, while the normal value is 50 µg/m3.
“More and more people are sick and our children are getting sick as well. That's the saddest thing,” said Hanifa Kovačević, a citizen from Tuzla.
Zvjezdan Karadžin, a professor of environmental security at the University of Tuzla, points out that yesterday's struggle of citizens against air pollution is a step forward towards the final implementation of measures that can contribute to reduction of air pollution.
“We have come to one critical point where people's lives in some cities have become unbearable. That is why we as citizens need to put a lot of pressure on all government structures to speed up the process of modernizing thermal power plants. The construction of Block 7 is necessary and should start as soon as possible, although this process is already five years late. We need to urgently introduce the process of desulphurization of Unit 6 of TPP Tuzla,” professor Karadžin emphasizes.
