EANA condemns Egypt security forces’ raid on Anadolu Agency office in Cairo

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, January 16 (FENA) - The Governing Board of the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) has strongly condemned the raid by Egyptian security forces on Anadolu Agency’s office in Cairo, Egypt.

EANA stands with its member, Anadolu Agency, and its journalists.

“We, the EANA Board, are strongly committed to the fundamental values of democracy and understand free journalism as being at the bedrock of democratic societies.

Therefore, moving against these values is an extremely condemnable course of action, and the EANA Board considers that the Egyptian authorities should immediately release the detained journalists and inform the international public on what were the legal grounds of their initial arrest,” stated the EANA Board.

The Federal News Agency (FENA), as a full member of EANA, joins in the condemnation of Egypt’s police raid into the offices of Anadolu Agency (AA) in Cairo and apprehending four employees of this news agency.
