SARAJEVO, January 22 (FENA) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Šefik Džaferović will lead the BiH delegation at the marking of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, former Nazi concentration camp, the BiH Presidency has confirmed to FENA.
The commemoration program will be held on Monday, January 27, because on the date, in 1945, the Red Army soldiers liberated Auschwitz, Nazi Germany's largest concentration camp. More than one million people died at Auschwitz, 90 percent were Jewish.
This year will mark the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Stockholm Declaration, under which the Working Group on International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research was established, and the 15th anniversary of the UN General Assembly establishing January 27 as International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.
Both events symbolically took place on January 27, the anniversary of Auschwitz's liberation, and accordingly, the main commemorative event will be organized at the Auschwitz Memorial.
Auschwitz survivors will be the most important guests of the event. Organizers expect about 200 of them from around the world to attend the central event.
Commemorations on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp prisoners should be attended by delegations from more than 50 countries, many of whom will be led by heads of state.
Attendance at the central memorial event was also confirmed by representatives of international organizations, including the Council of Europe, the European Council, the United Nations and UNESCO.
