Tuzla Airport requires greater investments to expand the number of destinations

TUZLA, February 4 (FENA) - At the moment, the Tuzla International Airport offers flights to sixteen destinations in seven European countries. Still, the most cost-effective destinations are those to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, France and Denmark.

“These are destinations that are stable for now. These two or three, which are currently on hold, mostly due to weather conditions and the frequent occurrence of fog, will be reestablished with springtime,” said today the Tuzla International Airport Director Esed Mujačić.

An increase in transport volume and number of destinations is planned this year. Prerequisites must be created for this, says Director Mujačić.

What bothers the airlines the most is the poor lighting on the approach to the airport, which is classified in the first, which is also the worst category in this regard.

The plan is to bring the runway lighting standard closer to the second category by introducing a central line. More than one million KM needs to be allocated for constructing the central runway line.

“There is another way, to improve access with certain devices, but this is the responsibility of BHANSA and flight control,” added Mujačić, specifying that these are expensive radars that can improve runway access. He also says that the airport plans to improve the approach lights in length so that airplanes could land even in bad weather.

The contract with Wizz Air expires in June this year. In a month, they will hold negotiations about its extension and the possible introduction of another aircraft, which would mean five to six new destinations. Negotiations are also underway with FlyBosnia, which could restore the old route to London in the near future.

Last year, the Tuzla International Airport serviced 592,000 passengers. They expect this year to hit the mark of 600,000 passengers, explains Director Mujačić.

He says some significant progress can be expected after this year's investments and after creating preconditions for new destinations. Both, the FBiH and cantonal governments promised assistance with infrastructure and capital projects.
