Bosnian Serb ex-soldier admits killing civilian as retrial begins in Belgrade

FENA Press release

BELGRADE/SARAJEVO, February 12 (FENA) - As his retrial opened at a Belgrade court, former Bosnian Serb soldier Milan Dragišić admitted killing a civilian in Bosanski Petrovac in Bosnia in September 1992, but denied responsibility for the deaths of two others.

Former Bosnian Serb Army soldier Milan Dragišić said he killed one civilian in Bosanski Petrovac in September 1992 as his retrial for wartime crimes began at Belgrade Higher Court on Tuesday.

Dragišić is also accused of killing two other people and attempting to kill three more, but he denied committing the other crimes.

“I cannot refute [responsibility for the first civilian’s killing]. As for the others, there is no evidence for that,” Dragišić told the court, BIRN reports.

Dragišić is charged with killing civilians Asim Kavaz, Eldin Zajkić and Safet Terzić and trying to kill Asim’s son Muhamed Kavaz, Asmir Lemeš and Sacir Hujić in Bosanski Petrovac on September 20, 1992.

The prosecution claimed that he went on a rampage after seeing the dead body of his brother Dragan, who was killed in battle in Bihac in north-west Bosnia.

In April 2019, he was sentenced to four years in prison for killing Kavaz and trying to kill his son and Lemeš, but was acquitted of the other allegations.

This verdict was quashed by the appeals court in November last year because of a violation of criminal procedures and a new trial was ordered.

Judge Vladimir Duruz said there was no need for new witnesses to be heard or new evidence introduced at the retrial.

“It does not follow from the appeals court’s decision that we need new evidence, except that it said that this chamber should reconsider all the facts,” Duruz said.

The next hearing is scheduled for March 20.
