Jurišić: Least number of missing persons has been exhumed last year

SARAJEVO, February 20 (FENA) - Only 97 remains of missing persons have been exhumed in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the past year, which is the least number since the existence of the Institute for Missing Persons.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute, Marko Jurišić, said today at the press conference that key reason to solve this problem is lack of political will, and the other one is lack of information on the locations of graves.

He pointed out that in Bosnia and Herzegovina's society, however divided it may be, it is necessary to finally reach a consensus on the problem that is being politicized. There is no social consensus yet that this issue is actually crucial if Bosnia and Herzegovina wants progress towards the European Union.

"I think we are still hiding information from each other about locations and politicizing this process," he said.

What is good, according to Jurišić, is the 2018 Declaration, when in London the prime ministers of regional countries expressed their commitment to resolving and stopping politicizing this issue and stressed that more capacities should be made available to institutions involved in the search for missing persons.

Regional countries, following Bosnia and Herzegovina's example of passing the Law on Missing Persons, have taken a similar step, and BiH has a good model in the search process because its pillars are the Law and engagement of the Institute, even though 7,478 persons are still missing, twice as many as in all neighboring countries. For some neighbors, this is the number one issue, so "we can envy them for their attitude to process of searching for missing persons," said the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Missing Persons in BiH.

Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Institute for Missing Persons in BiH, Amir Kulaglić, who also addressed the press conference, said that participants of today's meeting of the Committee with associations of families of missing persons will invite authorities to partner with institutions involved in the search for missing persons.

The biggest problems in the search for the remaining missing persons are the lack of information and reliable witnesses about the locations of graves, said Kulaglić.
