SARAJEVO, February 28 (FENA) - The Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina has ruled that March 1 is the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina until that fact changes, said last evening the High Representative in BiH Valentin Inzko attending a reception at the BiH Presidency building organized to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the declaration of independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He recalled that, after the referendum in Slovenia and after the referendum in Croatia, the European Union wanted to see what was happening in BiH and what kind of future the citizens wanted for themselves.
“That is why the referendum was organized on February 29 and March 1 in BiH, and those who participated in the vote, with 99.7 percent voted for independence of the country, although some chose to dispute it later,” Inzko said.
Following such a result of citizens saying "YES" to independence, on May 22, 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovins was admitted to the United Nations, along with Slovenia and Croatia, and Inzko underlines that BiH has the right to celebrate this day.
Asked by reporters about the rumors that the European Commission is considering imposing sanctions on the BiH Presidency member and leader of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), Milorad Dodik, Inzko reminded that there were problems before, but he believes this time the red line has been crossed when an entity in a country says it will not respect the decisions of the Constitutional Court.
He also said that there was no decision yet on the sanctions within the Peace Implementation Council (PIC), although there was considerable agreement that the red line has been crossed with Dodik's latest actions.
