Jašarević: COVID-19 outbreak and response accompanied by a massive ‘infodemic’

FENA Bisera Džidić

GENEVA, February 28 (FENA) - We remain concerned about the increasing signs of transmission outside China and we are calling on all countries to invest urgently in preparedness for the arrival of cases, and to prioritize the protection of health workers, individuals at risk and to communicate better the risks of transmission to their people, spokesman for the World Health Organization (WHO) Tarik Jašarević told FENA.

Jašarević noted that the WHO is working 24/7 with networks of scientists, clinicians, disease trackers, governments, supply chain experts and partners from the public and private sector to coordinate the COVID-19 response, in various technical fields.

The COVID-19 outbreak and response has been accompanied by a massive ‘infodemic’ - an over-abundance of information – some accurate and some not – that makes it hard for people to find trustworthy sources and reliable guidance when they need it.

“We are encouraged by the continued decline in cases in China,” says Jašarević.

He added that the WHO partnered with social media platforms limit the spread of misinformation.

Health authorities have the duty to proactively design and implement procedures for translating complex health information into layperson language and disseminating this widely to patients and the public, Jašarević underlined.
