Plakalo: ETIAS system important for the security of EU and BiH citizens as well

SARAJEVO, February 28 (FENA) - Secretary-General of the European Movement in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Haris Plakalo, said that after Croatia joins the Schengen system, citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be expected to use announced ETIAS as of next year. This is not an aggravating circumstance in terms of security, but an advantage for the European Union itself and for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The ETIAS system was announced two years ago and it was supposed to be in operation this year but its introduction has been postponed until the beginning of next year, in order to give EU-LISA Agency enough time to fully establish and operate this system,” Plakalo told FENA in an interview today.

He believes that the ETIAS system is important for the security of both, the European Union itself and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in this context it cannot be an aggravating circumstance for the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, because both, the European Union authorities and those of Bosnia and Herzegovina will know which persons, for any given security reasons, may not have received a positive answer on access and passing through the 22 EU Member States, including Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

This will provide greater certainty to the cooperation between the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the European Union regarding the exchange of data.

“It is important to point out that, from the technical procedures standpoint, filling in the form as well as its payment will be conducted online, therefore, it will be important to have internet connection and card payment options, since the price per form will be seven euros.

If the applicant receives a positive response for the entering the EU, the form for that at that moment enters the Schengen area database, will be valid for three years, subject to all visa liberalization agreements in this case, both valid for Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighboring non-EU countries. Applicants will receive a response in a few minutes to their email address,” says Plakalo.

He added that applicants who receive a negative response will not be able to enter the territory of the countries mentioned, and the criteria themselves will be explained before the European Travel Information and Authorization System ETIAS is launched.

"The United States already uses a similar system, so this is just one of the additional security procedures that Brussels plans to implement in order to strengthen security in the EU," said Secretary-General of the European Movement in Bosnia and Herzegovina Haris Plakalo.
