The busts of Ashdown, Mock and Mazowiecki unveiled at Kemal Monteno Park

SARAJEVO, February 28 (FENA) - The busts of Paddy Ashdown, Alois Mock and Tadeusz Mazowiecki were unveiled on Friday on a promenade at Kemal Monteno Park in Sarajevo.

A member of the wartime Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina Ejup Ganić said that this was a wonderful occasion to 'remember our country's true friends.'

“These busts are a reminder that, during the most difficult times for our country, there were people who helped us survive,” said Ganić.

Mirko Pejanović, also a member of the wartime Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina unveiling of these busts to pay homage to these honorable men is an act of giving back for all that they, as human beings and holders of public office, did in their countries for Bosnia and Herzegovina and its citizens'.

Chairman of the Assembly of the RBiH Miro Lazović, who also served as a member of the wartime Presidency of the RBiH, and today's Vice-Chairman of the Municipal Council of the Centar Municipality Sarajevo said it was "an honor to attend the unveiling of the busts of these great human beings who made a great contribution to the preservation and perseverance of Bosnia and Herzegovina".

“Of the three of them, I knew Paddy Ashdown the best. He was a man who truly loved Bosnia. I am sure that, if he were alive, Bosnia and Herzegovina would have been a full member of the European Union and NATO a long time ago. These busts are here to teach new generations that the values ​​advocated by these three great men should be the motto of our own lives,” he said.

Polish Ambassador to BiH, Jaroslaw Lindenberg said he knew Mazowiecki personally and that is why today was a special and important day for him.

“He was an intellectual, politician, democratic activist, Poland's first non-communist prime minister. In August 1992, the United Nations appointed him to monitor the developments in your country and ensure that human rights were not violated. However, a little less than three years later, after the fall of the Srebrenica Safe Zone, Mazowiecki resigned from his post as a protest against the passiveness of major international powers towards war crimes and genocide that were being committed in this country,” said Ambassador Lindenberg.

Austrian Ambassador to BiH, Ulrike Hartmann remembered Alois Mock's true commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina's international recognition as an independent and sovereign state.

“One of the persons we honor today was Austrian Chancellor and Foreign Minister Alois Mock. All three of them live in the collective memory of many in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Based on the universal values ​​they represented, they all enjoy a lasting reputation and respect. Austria has always been, and still remains a true friend of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Ambassador Hartmann said.

Paddy Ashdown served as High Representative in BiH from 2002 to 2006, and is considered to have been one of the most active international officials working in BiH.

Paddy Ashdown's family sent a letter that was read at today’s unveiling by Bojan Zec Filipović. Among other, they said they were flattered by the honor and respect that the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina show towards Paddy Ashdown, the man who loved this country and its people.  

The busts in Sarajevo’s Kemal Monteno Park carry the quotes from these three great men: 'Bosnia is under my skin. I can't even imagine what my life would be like without it' (Paddy Ashdown); 'The very stability of the international order and principles of civilization are at stake because of what is happening to Bosnia' (Tadeusz Mazowiecki); 'For the first time, a UN member state is being aggressively deleted from the world map. Every effort must be made to ensure the survival of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Alois Mock).
