Senior anti-corruption advisor from the US to take office in Sarajevo Canton

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 12 (FENA) - Representatives of the United States Embassy in BiH yesterday visited the Office for Corruption and Quality Management of the Sarajevo Canton. The visit is part of the regular contacts that representatives of the Political Department, the INL and the FBI have with the Office regarding the implementation of anti-corruption measures and the Law on reporting and procedure for checking the property information of holders of public functions in the Sarajevo Canton.

At a meeting with the Head of the Office, Erduan Kafedžić, they highlighted the continued support by the US Embassy to the work of that Office in the field of prevention and fight against corruption.

A candidate for the post of senior anti-corruption advisor has been announced, as it was previously noted in last November by Ambassador Eric Nelson and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jorgan Andrews.

Senior Advisor Eric Larson is expected to take office in the first half of the year. He is currently working as a Senior Justice Advisor at the US Embassy in Montenegro. He is a former prosecutor with extensive experience in the region, including working on corruption cases, and has worked as an international prosecutor in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He will be located and will work at the Sarajevo Canton Anti-Corruption and Quality Management Office.

In addition to personal property, holders of public office are required to report the property of their close relatives. The law came into force on May 11, 2019.

Its primary purpose is transparency and public scrutiny of work, and prevention of corrupt activities and illegal enrichment of public office holders in the Sarajevo Canton.

The law ensures the financial independence of the Office, as one of the most important prerequisites for a successful and effective fight against corruption.

In implementing the Law, the Office has so far issued 196 misdemeanor charges to holders of public office for failure to declare property, in the manner and within the deadlines provided for by the Act.

At the same time, the Office has initiated 100 procedures for verifying property information for the same number of public office holders.

Kafedžić thanked the US Embassy in BiH for its continued support in carrying out activities within the Office's mandate.
