Number of coronavirus cases is growing in Medjugorje

MOSTAR, April 2 (FENA) - A total of 70 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton so far. Medjugorje cluster has been the focus in recent days where the number of infected persons grew to 21.

The first case of Covid-19 in Medjugorje was confirmed on March 29, and the first infected person is a nun from monastery in Miletina.

"In the meantime, the monastery and the Mother's Village have been quarantined, while epidemiological services are working to record contacts," said Jurica Arapović, an infectiologist  at SKB Mostar, added that an increase in number of patients could be expected in the next few days.

Currently, there are 21 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in that focus, including one resident of the institution "Mother's Village".

In addition to 21 patients in Čitluk, 27 patients in Konjic, 20 in Mostar and two in Jablanica were registered in the Herzegovina Neretva Canton. Two men aged 53, one from Konjic and one from Mostar, have died so far.

Commenting on the situation at SKB Hospital in Mostar Dr. Arapović said that the number of hospitalized patients is from 15 to 20, three of which are patients with severe symptoms and life threatening.

Dr. Arapović said at least three people from Konjic have recovered, while several more patients were expected to confirm that they were no longer Covid-positive.

Commenting on the health status of medical professionals, Dr. Arapović said that a nurse and a doctor from SKB Mostar are positive for coronavirus, and they had been in direct contact with the first person infected in Mostar, who passed away in the meantime.

The nurse and the doctor are in home isolation, while the doctor from Konjic is hospitalized in Mostar, who got infected through her son.

Covid-19 was confirmed with another doctor who was in contact with a first-person from Široki Brijeg.
