Zenica cantonal hospital to expand isolation ward capacity to 220 beds

FENA Press release

ZENICA, April 2 (FENA) - The Institute for Occupational Health and Sports Medicine of the Zenica-Doboj Canton has made available its space and staffing capacity to the Crisis Staff of the ZDC Ministry of Health, said today at a press conference Director of the institute, Mersija Kasumović.

The ZDC Health Minister Adnan Jupić stressed that they continue to visit local communities and train new capacities for the possible transition to Phase 3 and 4 of the fight against coronavirus, but hopes that the epidemiological situation in that canton would not even enter those stages.

"The equipment that would be put into operation and the additional beds capacity would be absolutely enough for phase 2. We expect to increase the capacity of our isolation ward to 200-220 beds," said Jupić.

The current capacity of the Zenica Cantonal Hospital isolation unit is about 50 beds, with the possibility of expanding to about 100 beds, but by utilizing the premises of that institution, they will prepare enough capacity to accommodate the health facilities for all persons that tested positive for Covid-19.

The Zenica Cantonal Hospital Director Rasim Skomorac noted that there are currently nine Covid-19 positive patients in the isolation ward and the same number at the Zenica Cantonal Hospital, but that they are still awaiting the results of yesterday's tests of healthcare staff and patients from ZCH who were in contact with an infected patient at the Department of Internal Medicine.

"As soon as we get the findings, they'll be published. In this way, we will relieve some of the patients and employees who were tested yesterday. All of the positive patients, who are placed In the isolation ward and the ward at ZCH, are stable and no one is on a respirator. We hope they won't have to be,” Skomorac said.
