Čengić: I expect CEC BiH to call local elections next week

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 29 (FENA) - Chairman of the Local Self-Government Commission at the FBiH House of Representatives and SDP BiH MP Irfan Čengić issued a conclusion from the Commission that he refers all actors in the local elections process to the Constitution of the Federation of BiH, which clearly prescribed the duration of elected officials' mandates at the local level.

“I call Kathleen Kavalec, the Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH, to respect the constitutions and laws of the country in which she resides and does not support the views that have no foundation in the constitutions and laws of BiH statements on official channels of communication,” Čengić said after Kavalec shared on her Twitter account an article calling on the CEC to decide to postpone the election.

He also noted that elections are taking place at the same time in her country of origin, although the United States is the most affected country in the pandemic of Covid-19 virus, and stressed that BiH has its own constitutions and laws, and without amendments to the constitution and laws, the CEC has absolutely no authority to delay elections.

“Along with these attempts, the rights of citizens to choose and vote are also attacked. Such an initiative comes from the Central Election Commission (CEC), under the false pretext of concern for citizens' security, although elections are being held in the region and around the world this year, and they had been held in South Korea and Germany at the height of the pandemic,” Čengić emphasizes.

He added that he expects the CEC BiH to call local elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina next week, because the BiH Election Law tasks the CEC to call local elections 150 days before the first Sunday in October.

“The term of elected officials in 2016 under the Election Law lasts four years, and the term of office is also prescribed by the Constitution, precisely so that various parliamentary majorities would not be able to extend their term of office. Instead of false concerns about citizens' security, I suggest that the CEC begin work immediately to provide maximum protection to polling stations, starting with increasing the number of polling stations and reducing the flow of people to polling stations, the SDP stated.
