SC delegation marked defense of Sarajevo - May 2

SARAJEVO, May 3 (FENA) - Delegation of the Assembly and the Government of the Sarajevo Canton (SC) marked the Day of the Sarajevo Canton and the 28th anniversary of the Battle for the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina yesterday and laid flowers and paid tribute at Kovači cemetery, the Memorial for murdered children of besieged Sarajevo, the Lav cemetery, the Stadium cemetery and the central memorial to the martyrs and fallen soldiers of Novi Grad.

The Sarajevo Canton delegation was chaired by Mirza Čelik, MP and Chair of the Sarajevo Canton Commemoration Commission Admela Hodžić and Minister of Veterans' Affairs in the SC Hajrudin Grabovica, and there were also delegations from the BiH Presidency, the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the City of Sarajevo Coordination Board of Veterans' Organizations of the Sarajevo Canton.

Speaker of the SC Assembly Čelik said that May 2 was the day when the aggression army was not allowed to enter Sarajevo and occupy the capital of BiH.

However, the longest siege of a city in history of modern warfare started on this day, which lasted for 1.425 days when more than 11.500 people lost their lives, including civilians who waited in lines for food and water, but also 1.601 children who were killed mostly while playing in front of their shelters.

With great sacrifice and perseverance, Sarajevo has been defended and now its name on a global scale is a symbol of resistance and fight against evil, the Press Service of the SC stated.
