Čović: Representatives of Croat people remain committed to European path

FENA Press release

MOSTAR, May 6 (FENA) – Speaker of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly and HDZ BiH President Dragan Čović participated in a European People's Party (EPP) video conference today with leaders of the European Union and the Western Balkans discussing European integration in the region, as well as a common response to the coronavirus pandemic.

On this occasion, Čović addressed the officials and talked about European BiH, elections and election law, the Central Election Commission and irregularities in work, as well as BiH response to coronavirus, the HDZ BiH stated.

In his address, he emphasized that the Croat Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina has worked diligently on the European path of BiH, embodying the vision of a democratic, developed and modern state, and that equality and trust among constituent peoples is important part of that vision.

We, legitimately and democratically elected representatives of constituent Croat people, remain fully committed to the European path, working closely with the EU Delegation to BiH to fulfill the 14 key priorities highlighted in the EC Opinion from the previous year.

He also warned of irregularities in the Central Election Commission, which, he said, further threatens to disrupt and threaten the electoral process.

"The institution, which is tasked with observing and protecting one of the most important aspects of democracy and democratic elections, is failing to be an independent body and is in grave danger of failing its mission and the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina," Čović said.

He said that the fight against coronavirus is under control in BiH today and that the battle is slowly being won thanks to the solidarity and assistance that the country receives from the European Union.

Despite many challenges we face, we, the representatives of the Croat people, remain firmly and fully committed to our European partners and the European dream, hoping to gain candidate status for BiH this year.

“It is important that you support the affirmation of European political values in BiH, as well as the principle of deep respect for diversity and consensus democracy, since the future of a diverse multinational country like Bosnia and Herzegovina can be solely built on those values," said Speaker of the House of Peoples of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly and HDZ BiH President Dragan Čović.

President of the European People’s Party Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia Andrej Plenković, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and other officials from the European Union and the Western Balkans also addressed the meeting, it is said in a statement.
