SARAJEVO, May 22 (FENA) - On May 20, 1992, the United Nations Security Council adopted a decision recommending the General Assembly to admit the then Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the UN. Two days later, 28 years ago, BiH was admitted to membership, and the BiH flag was raised in front of the UN building in New York.
On that occasion, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of BiH, Haris Silajdžić, addressed the UN, and the reception was also attended by the first President of the Presidency of RBiH, Alija Izetbegović.
The adoption of this UN resolution was preceded by a referendum on the independence of BiH, which was held on February 29 and March 1, 1992.
The date of BiH's accession to the United Nations as the 177th member of this international organization is marked by one of the most important dates in the recent history of BiH.
Prior to accession to the United Nations, on April 6, the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina was recognized by the then European Union, i.e. the European Economic Community and the United States of America, which did so 24 hours later.
During 28-year membership in the UN, BiH was also elected a non-permanent member of the Security Council from 2010 to 2012. This membership was assessed as one of the greatest post-war diplomatic successes of BiH, and in January 2011, BiH chaired this body for a month.
BiH actively participates in the regular coordination activities of groups of countries within the UN - Eastern European Group, Central European Initiative, Group 77 and China, the Organization of the Islamic Conference, as well as potential EU member states, and is involved in peacekeeping operations around the world.
