MOSTAR, June 17 (FENA) - After the SDA-HDZ BiH inter-party agreement on the holding of elections in Mostar was signed on Wednesday, representatives of the international community also expressed their satisfaction.
The head of the European Union Delegation to BiH, Johann Sattler, said the EU welcomed the agreement on Mostar which was reached after a 12-year standstill.
“In this way, the process was returned to the institutions, that is, to where it belongs - to the Parliament. Thank you Mostar for your patience, you have waited too long,” said Sattler.
The US Ambassador to BiH Eric Nelson called on the parties to send the proposed amendments to Parliament without delay and for the Parliament to take legislative action to finally give Mostar citizens the opportunity to elect their own city officials.
“This agreement between the two political parties will direct the process to the institution to which it belongs, to the Parliament. As always, our focus was on resolving the impossibility of holding elections in Mostar in order to re-establish accountability and transparency and so that the city could once again become a symbol of community success,” said the British Ambassador to BiH Matthew Field.
The High Representative in BiH, Valentin Inzko, pointed out that a good step had been taken today and congratulated all those who had contributed to it.
“We can move on. The first good step has been made and that is why today this is, in a way, a celebration of democracy,” said Inzko.
The head of the OSCE Mission to BiH, Kathleen Kavalec, stated that today's agreement shows that solutions can be achieved in regard to some issues that have been hampering Bosnia and Herzegovina’s progress for years.
“This is an important step that will enable finding a legislative solution to the issue of Mostar. This is also proof that with the right commitment, political leaders can very well find solutions to such difficult and long-standing issues such was the case with Mostar,” Kavalec pointed out.
