Čović: Changes to Mostar Statute necessitate support of other political options

FENA Press release

MOSTAR, June 22 (FENA) - The session of the Presidency of the HDZ BiH on Monday discussed the elections in the Republic of Croatia, as well as the local elections in BiH, and the implementation of inter-party agreements between the SDA and HDZ BiH.

Commenting on the Mostar Agreement, HDZ BiH President Dragan Čović said that amendments to the BiH Election Law will be put into the parliamentary procedure this week, which would allow local elections in Mostar to be held at the same time as in the rest of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He explained that the amendments to the BiH Election Law must go through the parliamentary procedure and added that he believes that at the first sessions of the parliament in the next 15 days, both the House of Representatives and the House of Peoples, those changes will be discussed and adopted.

Commenting on the reaction of Milorad Dodik, who said that Serb representatives were excluded from the SDA-HDZ BiH agreement and that the number of Serbs in the Mostar City Council had been reduced, Čović pointed out that this was not true because, as he said, there were minimum and maximum quotas.

Also, Čović pointed out that in order to change the Statute of the City of Mostar according to the agreement, it will be necessary to ensure a two-thirds majority in the City Council when it is elected, which will require the support of other political options.

Asked if the signing of the SDA-HDZ BiH agreement was the beginning of a relaxation of relations between Croats and Bosniaks, Čović said he hoped the agreement on Mostar would help find a solution to BiH's Election Law changes related to the election of members of the Presidency and House of Peoples.
