VIŠEGRAD, June 28 (FENA) - Association "Women-Victims of War" marked yesterday 28 years of "Living Bonfire", crime committed against Višegrad Bosniaks. In June 1992, members of the "Avengers" paramilitary formation led by Milan Lukić detained and burned alive in a deliberately instigated fire more than 140 Bosniaks, mostly women, children and the elderly in Pionirska Street and in Bikavac. The youngest victim was only two days old. She was burned alive in her mother's arms.

On this day in 1992, more than 70 Bosniak women and children were detained and then set on fire in Meho and Derviš Aljić’s house in the Višegrad neighborhood of Bikavac.

A similar tragedy occurred on June 14, 1992, in Pionirska Street in Višegrad, when members of the Republika Srpska army and police burned more than 70 Bosniak women, children and the elderly in Adem Omeragić's house.

In the period until September 1992, about three thousand Bosniaks died in that city, and the remains of about a thousand are still being searched for.

Every year, the Association "Women Victims of War" and "Višegrad 92" mark this anniversary by throwing white roses into the Drina River from the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, thus remembering of all the horrific crimes committed in Višegrad during the last war.

President of the association "Women Victims of War" Bakira Hasečić said today that Višegrad is a city of "living bonfires", and that Bikavac and Pionirska Street are places of the greatest crimes in history.

“The crimes committed by Milan Lukić, Sredoje Lukić, Radomir Šušnjar are one of the most serious war crimes in the history of mankind. We always ask ourselves - what is it like when you are burned alive,” she said.

Milan Lukić was convicted to life sentence and Sredoje Lukić to 27 years in prison by a final verdict for the crime in Bikavac. Mitar Vasiljević was also sentenced to 15 years for participating in the crime. After serving 2/3 of his sentence, he was released and welcomed as a hero in Višegrad. The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina also sentenced Radomir Šušnjar to 20 years in prison for burning civilians in Pionirska Street. Also, the Court of BiH and the Supreme Court of FBiH convicted Boban Šimšić, Dragan Šekarić, Miloš Pantelić, Momir Savić, Nenad Tanasković, Novo Rajak, Oliver Krsmanović, Predrag Milisavljević, Vitomir Račković and Željko Lelek for crimes in Višegrad.
