Komšić: Srebrenica is a stain on conscience of most developed part of the world

FENA Press release

BERLIN, July 10 (FENA) - If all the evils and sufferings that happened in the Second World War had not been repeated in my country at the end of the last century, leaving unforeseeable consequences, I would have said it is easy to remember, but given my experiences I cannot say that today. Remembering is difficult. But although it is difficult, it is necessary.

Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željko Komšić, said this in his address at the commemorative gathering in the Memorial Church in Berlin, organized on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of genocide in Srebrenica.

“Bearing in mind that the notion of memory is what brought us together today, we need to remember the victims of the horrific terrorist attack that took place four years ago, not far from this place, when twelve innocent people were killed,” said Komšić.

He emphasized that the citizens of BiH cannot, will not and do not want to forget what happened to them, because if they agreed to that, they would give the right to those who wanted to destroy BiH and at the same time exterminate an entire nation from the face of the earth.

As he underlined, Srebrenica is in fact only the central point of the Bosnian genocide, i.e. criminal operations conducted against BiH and its citizens, from the beginning to the end of the aggression, from 1992 to 1995, were committed in other BiH cities with the same intention and with the same or similar genocidal consequences.

“Nevertheless, Srebrenica is the one that has been remembered by the world as a stain in modern history, a stain on the conscience of the most developed part of the world and civilization. For BiH and most of its citizens, it is a fundamental determination of its present and a determination of the lives of several generations of people,” he underlined.

He also said that rulings of international and domestic courts have only partly satisfied justice, although these verdicts can hardly be a satisfaction for the victims of genocide, they are still only a scientific contribution to history and the truth about the facts that cannot and must not be negotiated today, because the facts are not negotiated.

However, some people in the BiH neighborhood, who are responsible for the genocide, still seem to expect the victim to extend a hand to the perpetrator for the sake of some more comfortable future - instead of the perpetrator kneeling before the victim in the name of a just and peaceful future.

“We do not have the right to set things like that today, we do not have the right to do so as people, because we cannot forgive on behalf of the killed and their families, we do not have the right as an advanced society because violence must not be a value and a way that pays off," said Komšić.

He reminded that the victims of genocide have shown many times that they are ready for reconciliation and especially those who suffered the most.

They are happy with reconciliation, but they prefer the truth, said Komšić, appreciating that they are completely right because reconciliation without truth is a false reconciliation and an introduction to new tragedies.

“We need a partnership based on common interest and we believe that peace is the common interest of all. Nobody wants that more than we do in BiH and that is why we insist more than others in the region on suppressing any sign of an emergence of ideologies that can repeat or try to repeat genocide,” he noted.
