Rais Kavazović: OHR's reluctance to impose the law is a cheap bargaining

SARAJEVO, July 10 (FENA) - In our hearts and in our prayers are the sons and daughters of Srebrenica, both living and dead, brutally murdered at the hands of criminals in the crime of genocide. Cursed be every criminal and his deed and those who helped them, until the Day of Judgment, said the Reisul-ulama of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina in a sermon he held today in the Gazi Husrev-bey’s Mosque in Sarajevo dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica.

The strength of a Muslim’s faith, he said, is reflected in his moral conduct in hardship and adversity and perseverance in God’s path, and his moral greatness is reflected in his determination to persevere in doing good deeds, even toward those who have done them injustice.

He pointed out that without forgiveness in the community and repentance there can be no mental health of the community, nor moral healing of the individual, and that forgiveness and repentance are inexhaustible sources of goodness, charity and religious beauty, which are necessary for life at all times and in all places.

“The dignity of a Muslim is reflected in letting others know that he remembers and does not forget the good they did to him, but also the evil they did to him,” he said.

Sincere faith in God, he pointed out, requires us to reject from ourselves the devil's celebration of crimes and its perpetrators, requires us to reject false heroes, murderers and to accept the word of God that came as a savior and glad tidings, spoken through the prophets Musa, Isa and Muhammad, may God's peace and salvation be upon them all.

According to him, on the face of every victim of a crime, wherever the crime was committed, there are bloody traces of false faith and heresy. We see this everywhere, especially in the genocide cemetery in Potočari.

“It has been 25 years since those who were in the Serb army and police committed genocide in Srebrenica. The consequences of this evil, which has befallen our lives, we all feel, in many ways in our country and in the world. The strength of the evil that fell on Srebrenica tells us what difficulties we are facing today and the need to stop it,” he said.

Now, we see much more clearly that the evil of the Srebrenica genocide cannot be easily overcome and that its poison will circulate in this area for a long time, and the reason is that evil cannot be overcome by the passive attitude of community members, added Kavazović.

“We must fight the evil and we must point to it, it must be condemned and despised, otherwise it will want to triumph, to prove itself as good and useful. In recent years, we have witnessed such attempts. The evil of the Srebrenica genocide is crawling and trying to gain a voice among us, raise its head and justify its existence,” he pointed out.

Even today, 25 years later, we are amazed that, despite all the knowledge and confirmed facts in the court verdicts about what had happened in Srebrenica, we are witnessing human dishonesty of those who support and deny this evil.

“It is not uncommon for the promoters of this evil to be institutionally rewarded. An example of this is the Swedish Royal Academy. We are confused by the OHR's reluctance to impose a law banning the denial of genocide and crimes in Srebrenica and elsewhere. This hesitation reminds us of cheap trade and indulging this very evil,” said Rais Kavazović.

All this brings us back, he added, to the time of aggression, when the genocide in Srebrenica was committed due to the hesitation of the UN Security Council. On the other hand, we are glad that countries, such as Great Britain, Canada and the United States, stand firmly with the victims and do not allow Srebrenica to be forgotten.

He also pointed out that despite the difficulties, life in Srebrenica is being renewed, and that the truth about what had happened slowly, like the sun's rays, dispels the darkness that would like to take over this beautiful town forever.

People approach each other, aware of the burden placed on their weak shoulders. I believe that Muslims and Orthodox faithful will find ways to understand each other and help each other. A past that is difficult can also be an opportunity for getting to know each other better and for a better future.

All good people on all sides need to help Srebrenica, not by keeping silent about what had happened, but by trying to explain where the evil came from, in order to understand it. Srebrenica should become a place of culture of remembrance, not only of the genocide in it, but of everything that happened to us in the 1990s.

“Tomorrow we will gather at the cemetery in Potočari, to remember our loved ones in prayer. We believe that our martyrs are alive and look forward to our arrival and to each of the prayers we say for them.  Let each of our visits to the martyr's cemetery be our covenant that we will remain focused on good and peace among the people,” said the Rais-l-ulama of the Islamic Community in BiH, Husein effendi Kavazović in the Friday sermon which was today dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica.
