TALIN, July 11 (FENA) - A high-level United Nations event was held virtually on Friday commemorating the victims of the genocide committed in Srebrenica, Bosnia 25 years ago.

Estonia was represented at the event by Permanent Representative to the UN Sven Jürgenson, who noted in his statement that Estonia strongly supported the French-Mexican proposal of voluntarily restraining the use of veto powers in the UN Security Council in situations involving mass atrocity crimes, according to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release, reports Eesti Rahvusringhääling (ERR) – Estonian Public Broadcasting on its website.

"The Srebrenica genocide must not be forgotten," Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Reinsalu (Isamaa) said. "It clearly demonstrates the need for a timely and decisive international response. Injustice and impunity have proven in the past to be the main obstacles to healing, and could create fertile ground for the recurrence of conflict."

Friday's commemorative event was held on the Estonian-created Global Virtual Solutions platform Hybridity.

"It is a great privilege that the solution provided by Global Virtual Solutions is finding diverse use in the UN and that our technology can contribute to the discussion of such serious issues," Hybridity producer Lehari Kaustel said.
