Meat exports from BiH to Turkey to resume in August, quota increase requested

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, July 12 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH Staša Košarac and Ministers of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH Boris Pašalić and Šemsudin Dedić discussed meat exports to Turkey with representatives of the export company 'Tareks' in Sarajevo, which operates within the Turkish Union of Agricultural Credit Cooperatives.

At the meeting organized by Minister Košarac, it was agreed that, in accordance with the epidemiological situation, meat exports from BiH to Turkey would continue in August, and that the Turkish side is required to increase the quota by 2,000 tons this year, which would increase the open quota from 3,000 tons to 5,000 of meat. It was also pointed out that no more than 2,000 tons of the approved quota were used this year and that it will be used in the period from August to December.

Ministers Košarac, Pašalić and Dedić emphasized that the export of meat stockpile, created due to reduced local consumption due to the coronavirus pandemic, would additionally protect domestic production. In this context, it was agreed to introduce a new model, which would be in use as of next year, and which would imply that the competent ministries from the Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH finance part of the purchase of meat intended for export to Turkey, which would significantly affect increasing the quota of meat exports to this country.

Ministers Košarac, Pašalić and Dedić informed the representatives of the company "Tareks" about the agreed position that in the process of meat export it is necessary to have equal treatment of companies from the Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH that are certified by the competent inspection bodies of BiH and Turkey. It was emphasized that they will insist on the purchase of primary domestic production so that the project of exporting meat to Turkey would be of a production-oriented one, and not only a trading one.
