SARAJEVO, July 22 (FENA) - Minister of Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina Miloš Lučić and USAID Director in BiH Nancy J. Eslick today signed a grant agreement in the amount of 160,468 KM with eight non-governmental organizations that have safe houses in BiH.

The aim is to support the work of safe houses for the accommodation of victims of gender-based and domestic violence, especially in the context of the consequences caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Minister Lučić said that the cases of domestic violence and violence against women have increased, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, and they decided to help the work of safe houses in cooperation with USAID, so that they could continue with activities of providing assistance to victims of violence.

“Violence cannot be eradicated by legal norms, but we can work together to raise awareness of this global problem, which represents a gross violation of basic human rights and a severe form of discrimination against women and girls,” said Lučić.

It is our obligation, he said, as a society to point out the severity and negative consequences of domestic violence and violence against women in order to prevent it, prosecute the perpetrators and provide maximum support and protection to the victims.

Although it is difficult to change established patterns in society, USAID Director Nancy J. Eslick believes that these patterns must change, because, as she pointed out, no one has the right to commit violence, be it verbal, sexual, physical or any kind.

“Therefore, in agreement with the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH and the Agency for Gender Equality, USAID today announces an additional 175,000 KM of funds for the project we support,” said Eslick.

The agreement was signed within the project "Strengthening the Capacity of Institutions for Tackling Gender-Based Violence in BiH", which is implemented by the Agency for Gender Equality of BiH and financed by the US Government.
