SARAJEVO, July 23 (FENA) - The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Bosnia and Herzegovina has decided to call elections for the City Council of the City of Mostar on December 20 this year.

The President of the Commission, Željko Bakalar, emphasized that the citizens of Mostar have been denied the right to vote for 12 years, and that the conditions for holding the elections have been finally met, which is why all members wanted them to be organized as soon as possible.

“We believe that it is our obligation to call the elections as soon as possible and to hold them in the same year as the local elections in BiH. The opinion of the European Commission is also that the elections in Mostar should be ensured,” said Bakalar and reminded that today was the deadline, i.e., the 150th day, when the elections must be called under the law.

“The elections need to be called at least 150 days before they are held, which is why we could not call them on the same day as the local elections, on November 15,” he explained.

He added that the elections in Mostar are one of the 14 key conditions of the European Union for BiH, and that 35 city councilors will be elected.

The last local elections in Mostar were held in 2008.
