SREBRENICA, August 11 (FENA) - The municipal organization of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) Srebrenica has called on the Office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina and High Representative Valentin Inzko to immediately stop works on building a monument in downtown Srebrenica.
As said in the statement, at the initiative of OHR and supported by incumbent Mayor of Srebrenica Mladen Grujičić, the Municipal Assembly of Srebrenica made a decision to build a peace monument in Srebrenica in 2019.
The decision was preceded by a series of meetings with OHR and Inzko representatives, as Bosniaks in the Municipal Assembly, as well as associations of genocide victims, opposed the idea of building such a monument in the city where genocide was committed - the biggest crime in Europe since World War II.
“It was hard to believe in the sincere intentions of those who advocate the construction of the monument, especially if it is wholeheartedly supported by genocide deniers and if it is supported by those who consider convicted war criminals heroes and creators of what is now called the Republika Srpska entity,” stated SDA Srebrenica.
These days, the construction of the disputed monument has started, and the party reminds that during the decision-making, certain amendments were adopted, which were never implemented, and refer to the fact that the location of the monument will be discussed later.
According to them, if the construction of the monument is not stopped, Bosniaks in Srebrenica will erect a pillar of shame on the day of the opening of the monument in Srebrenica with the names of those who could, but did not prevent the genocide committed against Bosniaks in July 1995.
“The names of genocide deniers will be written on it, and at the very top of the pillar will be the name of High Representative Valentin Inzko, who will be among those who promised help to Bosniaks in July 1995, and we survivors of genocide have bitter memories of help from the international community,” announced the SDA Srebrenica municipal organization.
