SARAJEVO, December 29 (FENA) - The FBiH Assistant Minister of Health Goran Čerkez confirmed that the omicron strain of coronavirus is present in BiH as of today, stating that out of 100 samples tested at the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo, 10 were positive for this new strain.

"This will be confirmed by sequencing in the coming days. In the next month or two, the dominance of the omicron strain in relation to the delta is expected to happen," said Čerkez.

He says that the appearance of omicron is not unexpected because it was assumed that there was a circulation of the virus before, so it was a matter of time before it would appear in BiH as well.

"For now, we can confirm that omicron is spreading significantly fast. According to the latest information, it is spreading ten times faster than the delta strain. We hope that everyone will act responsibly, wear masks, keep their distance and be socially responsible at this moment so that we do not create a big influx in the hospitals," said Čerkez.

He points out that it is not yet possible to say how difficult the clinical state would be caused by omicron, considering that a lot is being examined still rom the scientific point of view.

"However, it seems that the symptoms are milder and that they mostly include headaches, runny nose, sore throat. Therefore, it is to be expected that we will know more in the coming period. Omicron does not require any special measures. The measures that were taken to prevent the delta also apply to the omicron. This is a good time to invite all citizens to get vaccinated with the third dose. It is recommended by all relevant institutions that the third dose be received three months after the second dose. This is desirable because protection is certainly stronger when you have all three doses," explained Čerkez.

He added that the situation regarding coronaviruses in most of the cantons is quite stable, and there is a small increase in those infected in the Herzegovina-Neretva, Sarajevo and Podrinje cantons.
